Work From Home Online: Planning Your Space

by Paul Jesse

There is no doubt that many people want to work from home online. Working from home gives you the freedom you desire. If you want to sleep all day and work all night, that’s your business. If you want to work in your pajamas and fuzzy bunny slippers, there’s no one to tell you not to. Working at home is a great idea, but what many people overlook is the importance of designing your workspace. You need to prepare your home office in order to be able to effectively work from home online.

Follow these steps to create your home office space:

1. Choose a space to work. Your workspace should be a separate area of your house if this is possible. This will help you get in the right mind frame to get things done when you work from home online. Where can you set up your space? Some people choose to convert a spare bedroom or den into a home office. Others choose to set up a desk in the corner of a living room or dining room. The space you have available in your home limits your choices.

2. Do not skimp on your furnishings. When you work from home online, you will be spending much time in your workspace. It’s important that you feel comfortable when doing so. Be sure to buy a high quality desk and chair as well as sufficient lighting.

3. Stock up on office supplies. There are going to be many things that you’ll need if you work from home online. Take a list with you to the store so that you don’t forget anything. You will need pens, notebooks, and post-it notes. Remember that little things like a wrist rest may make you feel more comfortable.

4. Minimize distractions. It’s very important that you can actually focus on your work when it’s time for you to work from home online. You may think that just because you no longer have gossipy coworkers at the water cooler, that you’ll be able to get more work done. Think again. There are plenty of distractions in your own home. Television, housework, and screaming children are some of them. Web surfing provides another distraction. Do your best to minimize these distractions by removing them from your office space.

5. Give the kids something to do. Do you want to work from home online so that you can spend more time with your kids? That’s great. Unfortunately, kids provide a major distraction to those working from home. Give them tasks that will keep them busy so that you will be able to focus on your own work. Older children can work on their homework. Younger children can do drawings or other craft projects.

6. Maintain your office. Now that you’ve got a nice workspace set up, it is important to keep it that way. Don’t let papers build up and become disorganized. Schedule some time in your week to tidy up your workspace so that things never get out of hand. These few minutes will make things easier for you over time.

If you follow these hints, you should have a comfortable and well-maintained office space in no time at all. You will surely be able to enjoy your efforts to work from home online. Good luck!
