Finding Public Domain Works

Imagine a nearly endless gold mine of content you can use and republish in any way you want. That’s what public domain works are. They’re works of text, video, image or audio that has no copyright you need to worry about. For most marketers this is like a dream come true. The only problem is: How do you find copyright free books? Read on to learn a few easy ways to find public domain works.

Public Domain Texts Online

Online today, there are multitudes of content that can be used by the savvy marketer or web content manager. One such resource is called Project Gutenberg, which publishes thousands of public domain works and makes them freely available.

Do a quick search on Google for many places that public domain materials are found. Or you can check out the Project Gutenberg site where thousands of public domain works are published for all to use free of charge.

Government Resources

Thanks to the Freedom of Information Ace, the US government makes free of charge many public domain works that otherwise wouldn’t be easy to find. Need pictures taken by the Space Shuttles or an aerial view of the White House? How about declassified reports and memos written by past presidents? Those are just some of the public domain items to be found on government websites that can be utilized in so many creative ways.

The list goes on and on. There is an unbelievable amount of content published by the government every year. There’s content on everything from Real Estate to the economy to divorce rates to healthy eating habits, all completely free. Many marketers have made fortunes simply by taking information published by the government, repackaging it and selling it.

Find Public Domain Audio Books

If you do a quick search online, there are many public domain audio files available online. Many of these audio files are simply stories that have been narrated by someone.

One example is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. The book is now public domain and you can republish it.

Think and Grow Rich is a rather well known example. However, there are many more obscure books in the public domain for which you can find audio books for and republish.

Find Expired Copyright Books

It’s a little known fact that any book written and published before 1923 is subject to public domain rights and therefore is fair game for anyone who would like to use that material for their own purposes. Have a favorite story from the Victorian age that you would like to re-create or draw inspiration from? Well, now thanks to public domain laws, you can do this. Be sure to check that the book copyrights have not been renewed before trying to republish anything, however, as some works fall under this category.

Find public domain books in old bookstores or in online directory sites for old or obscure titles. Once you purchase the public domain books, you can have them scanned in and you can either use parts of the written material or all of it for reprint. Or you can have tem transcribed and use them for other formats, although this may involve more time and a fee to find someone to do this for you.

Really old books that you might want to use probably don’t have anyone else using them. Publish them as your own to grow your business.

Make Money Using Public Domain

It’s easy to see that making money with public domain works is a lucrative business to be in. Be sure to check out all the great public domain resources available both online and offline. There are a lot of opportunities to find a great deal of content and start making money for very little effort.
